Barracudas Win Inaugural Premiership
The North Copenhagen Barracudas made football history by defeating the Copenhagen Crocodiles to win the inaugural 1991 Danish Australian "Rules" Football League (DAFL) premiership. The game was played on Saturday, September 7 at the A.B. Sportgrounds, Bagsværd, Copenhagen in front of a crowd of 300 people and in near perfect weather and ground conditions.
The two teams prepared for the game in different ways, with the Crocodiles meeting for a breakfast and a pre-match talk before travelling to inspect and familiarise themselves with the ground. The Barracudas took a much more laid-back approach, meeting at the ground an hour and a half before the game and allowing the individual to determine his own level of mental and physical build-up to the game.
With pre-match entertainment supplied by THE VOICE FM-radio station and speeches and player introductions by Mick Sitch, the game got underway at around two o'clock.
The game was played at a furious pace for the first half with the score lead changing several times. Opposition player tagging made it hard for either side to gain the upper advantage. Every ball and marking competition was vigorously contested with handballing being used regularly to clear the ball from packs of players.
Only two points separated the two teams at half-time with players from both sides performing well. The third quarter saw the Barracudas break away with accurate kicking and marking down the ground to their forward line. Players Mark Scotland, Steen Bak and Ian Cook lead the drive forward to get the Barracudas in front by 21 points at the final change. A final charge in the last quarter by Copenhagen was not enough to recover the score deficit and the Barracudas went on to win the game 9 goals, 12 behinds, 66 points to the Crocodiles 6 goals, 6 behinds, 42 points.
