SAFF Round 7 - Match report. 080801
Yet again, it was another sunny Friday afternoon for football in Stockholm.
Round 7, was “clash of the Titan” 1 v 2 on the SAFF ladder. A win for Södermalm would guarantee the a final berth and keep Bromma Vikings AFCs final chances alive. A win for Solna would pretty much guarantee them a finals birth as well.
Both team lined up to start play with 4-5 regular players out for the clash, but still managing to have a full squad of 16 to play.
Södermalm started on fire playing their best football this year. 1st year players Simon Faremo and Petter Eek creating some good passages of football. Link up with big man Stu "Gryttan" Tonkin to get Södermalm off to 6 goal first quarter.
The second quarter was a lot closer with a hard fought battle in the middle with Mike Nabb up against söder student Johan Dalhberg. However once again it was the strength of the Södermalm back line who won out in the second. Led by ever reliable, Lars “LT” hagberg, Ivan Rexed and club president Bobby “ Love “ Amore. The backline managed to keep Solna goalless for the second quarter, a first for them in this season.
Solna came to life in the 3rd quarter dominating the quarter led by coach Kingsley, new recruit Scott "Shooter" Hayes, Mike Nabb and Chris Parker. They put on 5 goals, 1 behind to södermalms 2 goals 4 behinds. Poor kicking under pressure by Södermalm let Solna back into the game.
The game was going to come down to the last minute as both team were tiring under the 30 degree swedish heat.
The last quarter Södermalm came out intent of steering home a victory for their testimonial player, Damian “JC” Hopkins. Great attacking football by Solna got them 2 early goals, but it was “JC” the stalwart of the Södermalm FC, captaining the club on the day for his last game, who settled the team with a great goal from 35 m out.
